It looks like we were able to exploit Deportivo's difficult situation (like they did to us 10 years ago!) and get their best player a bit below his market price. If the injuries don't start to crop up, his value is going to get higher in the years to come.

As a big fan of A Lo I can't help being a bit worried about what's going to happen to him. If Quique gives him a fair chance to fight for his spot then everything's fine, but sometimes these star signings just become starters by default. Then again, as Asenjo's case indicates, Quique is his own man when he chooses the starting eleven.

Luis Filipe rejected an offer from Barcelona to sign with Atletico Madrid.

The Deportivo La Coruna left-back, a former Real Madrid Castilla player, has joined Atletico for €10 million plus €2 million based on appearances and success.

Barca had matched the offer, says AS, but the Brazilian was committed to signing with Atletico.

Depor president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro is hoping to take Atletico striker Diego Costa on-loan as part of negotiations.

Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of left-back Filipe Luis from Deportivo La Coruna in a deal thought to be worth 13.5million euros.

Brazilian Filipe underwent a medical on Friday and was reported to have signed a contract later in the day to seal a move to Madrid following four years at Deportivo, but Atletico only made the transfer official at a press conference today.

Filipe was also paraded in front of around 300 fans at the Vicente Calderon.

The 24 year-old almost signed for Barcelona last summer but Deportivo demanded 20million euros for the full-back and the Catalan club ended up signing Maxwell from Inter Milan instead.

The player then suffered a serious injury to his right fibula in a match against Athletic Bilbao last January and only returned just before the end of the season.

That, however, was too late for the player to seal a place in Brazil's World Cup squad.

Filipe, capped just once by Brazil, made over 100 appearances for Deportivo in four years at the Galician club.

His sale will allow the club to pay off the four million euros owed to midfielder Sergio Gonzalez in unpaid wages.

Failure to pay that debt by August 2 could have seen Deportivo punished with relegation.

Deportivo also owed Atletico close to 2million euros for the transfer of defender Ze Castro last year.

Filipe, meanwhile, is delighted to finally seal his move to Atletico.

"It has been a very complicated operation," he told reporters during his presentation.

"I am happy because this is a great and historic club in Spanish football."

Filipe had a spell at Real Madrid as a youngster, but says he has always admired Atletico.

"Real Madrid opened the doors for me to Spanish football, but I have always had affection for Atletico," he said.

The full-back claims he is not concerned to have missed out on a move to Barcelona either.

"I didn't have to choose between Barca and Atletico - I simply chose Atletico," he said.

Having completed his move, the Brazilian is eager to play alongside Uruguay striker and World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan, as well as working under coach Quique Sanchez Flores.

"I am excited by the team they (Atletico) are putting together. We have the best player from the last World Cup (Forlan) and a great coach (Sanchez Flores). To grow as a player it is key to work with the methods of a coach like Quique," he explained.

Filipe is Atletico's fourth signing of the summer, following the arrival of Fran Merida from Arsenal and the buy-back deals for Mallorca's Mario Suarez and Valladolid's Diego Costa.

The club are also reportedly in negotiations to sign Uruguay defender Diego Godin from Villarreal.

Atletico Madrid full-back Filipe Luis insists that he is ready to find success at the club following his summer switch from Deportivo.

The Brazilian swapped the Riazor for the surroundings of the Vicente Calderon for a fee of €12m, and although injury hampered the commencement of his Colchoneros career, he has now ousted Antonio Lopez from the left-back slot.

AS reports that the 25-year-old said of his new club, “There are so many quality players here that the team performs so much better. I am now playing in a big team, and I see how much it hurts to lose and how good it is to win. Playing at the Vicente Calderon is different. It is a challenge in my career where I want to succeed.

“I think in every game I play I try to give my best performance. It is clear that it took a long time to start, but I was confident and now I feel strong and am doing well.

“There will always be games where I will do either better or worse, but I always go out onto the pitch to give everything.”

Filipe also commented on the new contracts signed by colleagues Jose Antonio Reyes, Tomas Ujfalusi and Paulo Assuncao, saying, “It is a reward for the effort that these players have given in previous seasons, and for how important they are within the team.”
