Diego Forlán was passionate about sports since he was a kid. He played all kinds of sports, until an accident suffered by his sister caused him to choose football. Alejandra, his sister, was in a car accident, in which her boyfriend lost his life, and she survived after spending five long months connected to an artificial respirator and ended up paralyzed. In that moment, only a child, and before hav1ng other sports cross his path, the new Atletico de Madrid player told his parents that he would become a professional football player to pay for his sister’s medical expenses.

His father, Pablo, who was a right-back for the unstoppable Peñarol squad that conquered the Libertadores Cup in 1966 against River Plate and the Intercontinental against Real Madrid, instilled in him the greatness of the king of sports and gave him his best private classes, stubbornly making him practice what has become a tremendous shot with both feet and converting him into a ‘matador’ as he got older; later, the intervention of Jorge de Paula, a family friend who was convinced of his bright future when he saw him play as a youngster, helped kick-start Forlán’s career.

He began at Peñarol and, being young and after passing through Danubio, signed for Independiente de Avellaneda, where he continued to mature as a footballer and also as a person. It was difficult for him to assimilate living apart from his family and he had to live with six other youngsters in one of the rooms that the club had for their prospects, but he kept moving forward.

He debuted in the maximum category in Argentina when he was 19 years-old. In 2001, shooting with his left and his right as his father taught him, he was the top goal-scorer in the Apertura and crossed the Atlantic in January of 2002 thanks to Manchester United. Stuck behind strikers such as Van Nistelrooy, Rooney and Saha, he opted to accept the offer made by Villarreal. After three years of great play in the team from Castellón, he has signed with Atletico de Madrid.

I've always had the impression that he's a good person.

I hope he does well at Atlético and that he fullfills every aspect of his game.

True goalscorer.

The nickname of Forlan is Cachavacha:

Me too. When he scored rare goals for Man Utd (even against Liverpool) he was very humble in his interviews. He doesn't say controversial things that irritate opposition, including that controversial goal we scored when we beat Villareal.

Forlán Is A Great Ambassador - Francescoli

Enzo Francescoli has heaped praise of compatriot Diego Forlán for being a great ambassador for Uruguay as he continues to impress since joining Atlético de Madrid.

The legendary forward, nicknamed The Prince, is delighted to see his fellow countryman doing so well at his new club after hitting six goals already this term.

As well as his performances on the pitch, Francescoli believes that Forlán's manner away from the game also makes him a great representative for Uruguay.

"Forlán, besides being a fantastic player, is a great professional that represents all Uruguayans very well," the former River Plate star said.

"He arrived in Madrid with a real strength after having some great seasons with Manchester United and Villarreal and he will be a huge success at Atlético, who have a great team.

"The majority of Uruguayans that have played in Spain have done well. They have been successful, but not only because of their football ability, but also because of their professionalism and ability to adapt."

Francescoli then admitted that he no longer has any favourites in the Spanish league after Zinedine Zidane, who has named the Uruguayan as his idol, retired.

"Now I can follow Spanish football without worrying," he explained, before looking ahead to who will challenge for the title this season.

"Last year nobody predicted Real Madrid would do anything and they won the league," Francescoli continued.

"Now Barcelona are playing well again and they want to regain top spot. We will have to see, but there are many clubs capable of winning it this season."

Diego Forlán: “I really enjoy playing at Atlético de Madrid”

He’s already an undisputable idol of the Atlético de Madrid fans. It took barely six months for Diego Forlán, with his play and his goals, to put the Madrid fans in his pocket. The Uruguayan striker acknowledges that his adaptation has been easy thanks to the others in the locker room, emphasizing that his dream is to win a title of some sort this season.

The Uruguayan forward commented, to begin, that he feels “very happy to be at Atlético de Madrid, because I’m at a really nice Club. It’s a good group and that makes our coexistence positive and allows us to face everything with a stronger desire. Besides, Madrid is a really beautiful city. Yeah, I’m really enjoying playing at Atlético. I form part of a good squad and I have a good time, although I’ll acknowledge that at the same time I notice the responsibility that it means to play at a Club like this. Nevertheless, you have to enjoy all of this because the atmosphere that surrounds the team is unbeatable. That makes all of the players give more on our part so that things go as well as possible”.

Many of Atlético’s matches have been spectacular and Diego stressed that “we’ve had many games with lots of goals, but I’m of the opinion that each one is different. Without going any further, in the match against Panathinaikos we won at the last minute. In short, we’re doing fine, going from match to match, enjoying and trying to play good football”.

Forlán has realized that since he started wearing the red and white of the team that “Atlético is a Club with an enormous following on the part of their fans and has a large media impact , but I acknowledge that it’s surpassed by expectations. It has many fans and is very well followed on a worldwide level. Also, from the front office on down, the humanistic touch that exists is very important. All of that makes it want you to face the day-to-day with a strong desire. My intention, and that of my teammates, is to achieve our goals to satisfy all of those people who follow and support us every match”.

Atlético has played the first half of the campaign in a noteworthy manner, but the striker indicated that “I don’t like to give the team a grade. Atlético is fine, but we have to go little by little. The important thing is to be close to the places at the head during the entire season. Everything is decided at the end, which means that you have to be consistent at all times so as not to fall away from the top spots and then try to finish things off later. I’ll insist that we have to go match to match and not think about a specific position”.

Second round
Forlán added that “fighting for the League title isn’t easy because Real Madrid and Barcelona are there, and then you have teams that are battling for Champions and UEFA spots, such as Villarreal and Espanyol. I believe that Real Madrid and Barcelona are a step above us with regard to their rosters, but we want to be up there with humility and hard work. Anyway, there’s lots of League left and we’ll have to see what happens, though we’re not thinking about that”.

The general feeling of the squad is similar to that of the Uruguayan, who reminded that this is “when I won the Golden Boot. I wasn’t thinking about it, but things happened over the course of the season and in the end I was able to win it even though it wasn’t one of my goals. The opportunity presented itself to me at the end of the season and I didn’t waste it. We’d love to win some title, but it’s going to be a bit complicated. We’ll see if we’re in a position to fight for one of the championships as time passes. There’s quite a bit of League, King’s Cup and UEFA left, and we’ll see if we have real options in one of them. We’re on the right track, but there’s a lot left”.

He didn’t hesitate when it came time to assess the team’s roster, emphasizing that “there are great players at Atlético; players who sacrifice themselves in defense, but who also have great skill and can score a lot of goals. This is something important and determinant to fight for one of the competions in which we’re competing. We have good defensive security we have several players up top who are capable of scoring goals”.

When he has to speak inthe first person, Forlán left it clear that “I don’t like to talk about the goals that I score. I always want to score goals, but I also like contributing things to the team with other plays”.

What he did stress was that “I usually play better in the second rounds of league play. I always think that you have to take advantage of the moments and try not to think too much about the fact that I play better during one part of the competition that the other. I know that the year I led the Liga in scoring or that last year I put in lots of goals in the final three months of the season. I was a bit more inconsistent in other parts of the year than at the end of the campaign”.

Diego is well surrounded and when asked about which of his teammates has most attracted his attention he affirmed that “nobody has surprised me because the are all skilled. Sure, I’ve been getting to know footballers such as Raúl García, who plays at a high level and is having a great season. Then there’s Kun, who is a highly skilled and very young footballer with many good eyars in front of him. Anyway, there are footballers who can play really well”.

The Atletico supporters are delighted with Forlán, but the striker, to finish, wouldn’t dare to affirm that his play has surprised those in the stands more than expected: “I know that it’s different for them to see you in a sporadic manner, only twice a year, than every Sunday. I don’t know if I’m surprising the Atlético fans, but I’m trying to play as well as I can. I can only say that I’m happy and comfortable at Atlético and I’m trying to make the people at this Club enjoy good football”.

Forlan: Atletico Madrid a sleeping giant
tribalfooball.com - January 01, 2008

Diego Forlan has described Atletico Madrid as a "sleeping giant"

The Uruguay international striker is in his first season at the Vicente Calderon and said: "Atletico is a big club with a tremendous passion and all this is very nice. It is a sleeping giant that has long been unable to get good results.

"On the 20th of January we receive Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderon and it will be a classic. A good result is going to help us in the search for a place to play in the Champions League."

I need to publicly apologize to Forlan for making fun of him back when he moved from Independiente to Man. Utd. I always liked his attitude but because he struggled to score in England despite playing well I used to make jokes about it. But he's shut me up by letting his talent do the talking.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Forlán's two goals against Levante make his total tally in Spain 67 goals, which means that he's now on par with his countryman José Zalazar. Consequently, Forlán's next goal will make him the highest scoring Uruguayan ever in La Liga.

He was really disappointed from the Villarreal supporters

They gave him no affection after three successful years in the El Madrigal, so he was really down. Then the result......

Forlán fired up for Atlético
Friday 4 April 2008

Few would blame him for starting to reflect on a successful debut season with Club Atlético de Madrid, but Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán remains fully focused on helping his team rejoin the European élite.

Team objectives
Easily recognisable with his long blond locks, the 28-year-old has found the net with impressive regularity this term, scoring 13 times in 28 league appearances. He also added another four strikes in Atlético's UEFA Cup bid to further mark himself out as a successful acquisition, but Forlán refuses to bask in those statistics. "I like evaluating things at the end of the season," he told uefa.com. "What's more important than my personal situation is for the team to achieve the objectives we set at the start."

Big club
As Forlán has discovered, Los Colchoneros always aim high when plotting a campaign. "When you're at a club as big as Atlético, you're under an obligation at the start to fight for everything," he said. "That's what's good about this challenge." Of course, on the flip side the team's UEFA Cup Round of 32 and Copa del Rey quarter-final exits were greeted with frustration. But given that they lie fourth in the Primera División with eight games remaining, they could be about to offer their supporters UEFA Champions League football next season.

Fantastic crowd
"Atlético has a fantastic crowd and they back us all the time," added Forlán. "It's true the pressure here is huge but it's something I've been used to all my life - in Argentina, Uruguay, England and Spain. It was tough to get knocked out [of the UEFA Cup] so early, but we soon got over it and now we're worried about the league." They ought to be worried too, with Real Racing Club Santander breathing down their necks on the same points total. "For the moment, we're still fourth," countered the summer signing. "We've been there for a while now and we'll give everything to stop anyone taking our place."

Agüero praise
Should they hold on, they will return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1996/97, although they will have to negotiate the third qualifying round. Forlán knows the competition well from his spells with Villarreal CF and Manchester United FC, and he would love to take on Europe's best alongside his highly-rated strike partner Sergio Agüero. "Obviously, we're talking about a true star," he said of the 19-year-old Argentinian international. "He's got everything he needs to triumph in football and that's what's happening. It's easy to play with people of that quality."

Madrid respect
Agüero might easily say the same of his South American colleague, whose obvious love for the Spanish capital has aided his transition since leaving Villarreal. "If you like, you can go into the town centre or if you prefer tranquillity you can stay on the outskirts, which is where I live," he said. "It's a fantastic city. I feel comfortable here and I've adapted well." Atlético fans will be hoping the love affair continues.
